Together, we can make new TB vaccines a reality to help end this millennia-old disease.
The theme for the 8th Global Forum on TB Vaccines — Committed to success for a world that can’t wait — honors the tireless efforts of a global community dedicated to bringing about urgently needed vaccines to help finally end TB.
The promise of the TB vaccine field is palpable. Decades of multi-disciplinary innovation has brought us multiple candidates against one of the world’s most complex pathogens. The first of these may be available this decade – more than a century after BCG was first administered.
Enduring collaborations and new partnerships define this effort. Cutting-edge science is enhancing our knowledge of TB immunology and vaccine design while advancing the pipeline through late-stage trials. Preparedness efforts are laying the groundwork for the timely introduction of new vaccines once licensed, including through country- and region-led approaches and work under the WHO TB Vaccine Accelerator Council. Civil society meanwhile continues to champion a community-led and rights-based response.
Success will be measured end-to-end. Through multiple licensed vaccines that work for all populations, everywhere. Through advancing next-generation candidates that will be more effective, durable, and accessible than the first across the finish line. Through manufacturing, procurement, and delivery systems fit-for-purpose in high burden contexts. Through innovative and sustainable financing from discovery research through to implementation. And through timely and equitable rollout as part of a comprehensive and integrated package of care.
Reaching these goals requires concerted and coordinated action across the breadth of the field. We look forward to welcoming the global TB vaccine community to the Paraninfo Building at the University of Zaragoza in April 2027 as we reaffirm our commitment to TB vaccine success in all its forms.
